 | Kim-Chi & Ryan
| | Once upon a time, approximately 9 years ago at a house in Mississauga, two bright-eyed seventeen year olds met for the first time at a mutual friend's party. She was already sitting in the living room with her friends when he first walked in. Their eyes never quite met, but they were aware of each other; he remembering her as the mysterious girl in the red sweater, and she remembering him as the boy with remarkable blue-green eyes in a grey t-shirt.
Over time their respective friends became friends with one another, and he learned that her name was Kim-Chi, and she learned that his was Ryan. They occasionally spoke briefly over ICQ and MSN, but nothing of substance became of it. They attended different high schools, and as he spent most of his time hanging out with his friends, playing basketball, and “just chillin'”, and she spent most of her time studying and filling out scholarship applications for university; they had very little in common. She dismissed him as a jock and he believed that she was quite driven, but also quite boring.
As fate would have it, they both enrolled at the University of Toronto, Mississauga at the same time. And as if that weren't enough, they serendipitously were placed in the same Frosh Week group, out of the 50 or so groups that were there.
I may be wrong, but with human nature, we tend to gravitate toward what is most comfortable and therefore familiar. Thus, both Ryan and Kim-Chi, being known to one another, decided to give each other another chance, to talk, and perhaps discover new facets of each other's personalities. Or at least, that's what Kim-Chi had hoped. When the two of them sat on the bus on their way to downtown Toronto, Ryan proceeded to talk about the Raptors for 45 minutes straight. At the end of which, he asked her what she was similarly passionate about, and after an awkward silence, she replied, “There are things in my life that I enjoy, but nothing that I could quite spend 45 minutes talking about.” But despite this rough start, Ryan and Kim-Chi eventually were able to get to understand one another better. A mutual attraction developed, and one month after university started, they were a couple.
Now fast forward seven years later:
When we started the story, we had two 17 year olds, looking forward to the future but not quite sure what it would behold. Today, Ryan is a successful elementary school teacher, well loved by students and staff alike. Kim-Chi is in medical school, excited to be graduating soon. Throughout their undergraduate years, both Kim-Chi and Ryan have learned how to support each other while at the same time thriving independently. They have learned to enhance each other's lives, and how to make personal sacrifices. They have been there for each other through times of extreme sadness, happiness and four years of a long distance relationship. They have not always been perfect, and in fact, at times far from it. But what they do works for them, whether it be walking around Port Credit, tobogganing down hills in the winter, playing Jenga, or falling asleep on the living room floor while watching movies. They have learned what things work for them, and are excited to be getting married June 26, 2010 so that they might be able to explore new adventures and the rest of their lives together. |
