We are Bret and Jacquelyn! Now, we know we aren't perfect but our friends and family agree that as a couple we come pretty close! We first stole a few glances at each other at Cawthra Park Secondary School where we both attended highschool. However, neither of us ever spoke to each other during our highschool days. Years later, we both became teachers in Peel. In 2006, we met at the OPHEA (Ontario Physical and Health Education Association) conference at the Nottawasaga Inn in Alliston, Ontario. Throughout the evening, we repeatedly looked at each other trying to place where we knew each other from. Later on, we started to chat and a friendship was formed. Thanks to the other people that we met at the conference a "reunion" for the new OPHEA friends was set. A few weeks later the group got together and had a night out. We danced, chatted, drank and had a great time at Mississauga's Faites Irish Pub. Needless to say, we "hit it off" and at the end of the night Bret and some friends stayed over at Jacquelyn's Parent's house. When all had gone to sleep, Bret sneaked past Jacquelyn's parent's bedroom (a bold but romantic move to show his interest in Jacquelyn) and knocked on Jacquelyn's bedroom door and said: "I don't know if this is appropriate but…." And kissed her goodnight (remember this for the proposal!). The following day, the two went for a walk by the lake and later that nigh Bret came to surprise Jacquelyn at her hockey game cheering her on and leaving a note on her windshield. Our first official date (dinner and a movie) happened the following weekend and we have been together ever since!
When trying to describe the three years we have been together, there is not just one word. The years have been adventurous, fun, loving, spontaneous, romantic, challenging, and so much more. We have traveled Canada from West to East, and although the Country is beautiful, Mississauga is our home! Bret is an avid triathlete and Ironman finisher and Jacquelyn is his number one fan and supporter! Everyone who is familiar with the sport knows the commitment it takes to be an Ironman and that alone makes us quite the special couple! We have ridden our bikes from North of Huntsville to Mississauga, just for fun (and, of course, bragging rights). We enjoy fishing, hiking, walking and watching movies together. We are always pushing each other and no matter what we always support and cheer for each other on and off the course and have never missed each other at a finish line. We can't wait to continue to be each other's number one fans on and off the course throughout out our marriage!
Our proposal, as told by Jacquelyn, we have been told, makes other guys look bad—so guys, listen up!! Earlier in the week, Bret arranged to meet with my parents. He took my dad a bottle of wine and my mom a bouquet of flowers. He asked for their blessing and permission to marry him. Of course, they said "yes" and my mom cried! Then my mom had to avoid me for the next few days to keep the secret! The following weekend, Bret took me on a mystery date. Now, many couples would think that this was the first clue but… we had gone on surprise dates before so I wasn't expecting a proposal. We both love surprises! I was blindfolded and taken to our first meeting place: the Nottawasaga Inn. We enjoyed a weekend of everything we love from Mini-Golf, hiking, fancy dinners, and more. For the rest of the weekend, Bret continued to woo me—it was the best weekend ever! On our way back from Alliston, I told Bret that he just took me on the best date ever and that if and when he was thinking of proposing that this weekend was going to be tough to beat! I was thinking that it would have been a perfect proposal because of all the planning and effort that went into it and all the wonderful memories that were re-lived during the date.
The night we got back we were supposed to have dinner with my parents. (FYI: earlier in the week, Bret put up a fight not to go there for dinner because it was inconvenient; little did I know that he actually asked my parents to invite us for dinner— wow, he is good!). We had a nice dinner with my parents and slept over (in our separate rooms) at my parent's house. Just as I was about to fall asleep I heard a knock at my bedroom door. I opened the door and the hall was lit with candles and Bret started with "I know that this is appropriate …" and then told me how special I was and then got down on one knee and proposed! I, of course, cried and said "YES!" My parents had no idea when and where he was going to propose so right after we became engaged we rushed into my parent's bedroom to wake them up and share the fabulous news and right after that call Bret's parents! Bret planned the whole weekend to re-live milestones in our relationship and proposed where we had our first kiss! Fortunately, because my parents knew that it was going to happen in the near future my dad bought a bottle of champagne for the moment we came to tell them of our engagement! So, in the early hours of the morning we celebrated with my parents drinking champagne in our pajamas!! It was perfect!
So, why should you vote for us? The answer is simple, we are both native Mississaugians, who were raised here and definitely are going to raise our own family here. We can't imagine our lives without each other and our so happy to be engaged and more importantly we are thrilled to spend the rest of our lives together. We are getting married January 29th, 2011 so can be wed in a true Canadian winter and to highlight our uniqueness and sense of adventure. It will be a beautiful and romantic evening. Please vote for us as Mississauga's Perfect Couple because even though we know we aren't perfect, we're sure we are perfect for each other! |

We are so grateful to all of our friends and family for putting up with us the last 5 weeks… probably wasn’t easy (i.e Merry Christmas, did you vote today?, Sure I can go out tonight, after I vote…. ) Yikes! It was a little insane. To everyone who voted for us, if you voted once, once a day, whenever you got the chance, several times a day, or every 2 hours (if you did the later, kudos to you—that’s dedication) we thank you from the bottom of our hearts! We are very fortunate to have the best friends and family ever---Win or lose… Thanks for voting! If you voted for us based on reading our bio--thanks for supporting us (even though Jacquelyn's wearing a leaf jersey). Every vote counts! We appreciate your vote!
